Athena X-ray Advances: ASST & ACO Science Webinars
The next webinar of the “Athena X-ray Advances: ASST & ACO Science Webinars” will take place on the 7th of December at 15 CET. Ioanna Psaradaki will give the webinar entitled: Mineralogy of interstellar dust: an X-ray overview.
Abstract: Interstellar dust is an important ingredient of the interstellar medium of galaxies. It appears in every stage of stellar evolution, from evolved stars and supernovae to protoplanetary disks. Dust is also the repository of heavy elements in the Galaxy. The abundant elements Si, Fe, Mg, and O together with C are known to be the main ingredients of interstellar dust. Understanding the chemical composition, origin, and evolution of cosmic dust is a key question in astrophysics. X-ray spectroscopy provides a privileged point of view to the understanding of dust grain properties. Dust imprints unique extinction features in the spectra of bright background X-ray sources, extensively studied by ongoing X-ray telescopes bearing high-resolution X-ray spectrometers. In this talk, I will review recent results on dust grain chemistry obtained using XMM-Newton and Chandra. I will discuss the effort of our community to build a global X-ray dust extinction model based on laboratory experiments. I will further discuss the prospects of studying the dust mineralogy using future X-ray missions, giving emphasis on how Athena will complete our picture.
