Athena investigations of the solar system, by giving us ever deeper insights in the complex workings of planetary magnetospheres and exospheres, will answer many of the questions left open following the pioneering work done with Chandra and XMM-Newton, and will add enormously to our understanding of the interactions of space plasmas and magnetic fields.
