Caption: The Athena/X-IFU spectrum of the Fe group elements in 3C397, a few thousand year old galactic supernova remnant of a type Ia supernovae. The XMM-EPIC best fit model (scaled up by a factor of 2) is shown to illustrate the power of high resolution spectroscopy. This figure is adapted from Williams et al. (2019). Such a measurement would enable direct comparisons with hydrodynamic modeling of supernova explosion, as required to bridge the gap between the stellar progenitor, the explosion and the remnant (Williams et al. (2019)).

Additional comments: The XSPEC model restricted to 7 to 9 keV is TBabs*vvnei. The X-IFU response file used is: XIFU_CC_BASELINECONF_2018_10_10.arf.
