Athena X-ray Advances series: Sebastien Guillot's webinar
The next webinar of the “Athena X-ray Advances: ASST & ACO Science Webinars” is forseen on the 12th of April at 15 CEST. This time Sebastien Guillot (IRAP, Université Paul Sabatier) will give the webinar entitled "Athena’s cosmic hunt to discover the riches of neutron star interiors”
Abstract
The interior composition and structure of neutron stars still remains a mystery more than 50 years after their discovery. Because the extreme densities in neutron star interiors is completely out of reach for Earth laboratories, nuclear physics relies on assumptions for the interior composition, and on extrapolations from our knowledge of low-density matter. As a consequence, the so-called "Dense matter equation of state", with important implication for astrophysics and fundamental physics, is unknown. Thankfully, it can be constrained with measurements of neutron star masses and radii. A variety of observational methods exist to determine these macroscopic properties, most of them involving X-ray observatories. This talk will be a brief overview of some of these techniques and their current results, in particular those obtained with the NICER X-ray telescope. I will also present Athena's expected performances in this domain.
